John Magiro
‘Powering Change in Rural Kenya’
In the heart of Central Kenya, John Magiro, affectionately known as the ‘engineer’ in his village, embarked on a transformative journey after completing his secondary education in 2016. His vision was to bring electricity to his community through a mini-hydro project that began modestly with a bicycle dynamo to generate power for his own family.
Facing financial constraints that prevented the community from approaching Kenya Power, John’s neighbors sought his consent to share the electricity generated from his bicycle dynamo. This inspired him to explore local, accessible materials to develop a sustainable power solution for his village. Armed with the knowledge gained from his physics class, he identified the Gondo River with its waterfall as an ideal site to kickstart his project.
Word of John’s initiative spread, capturing the attention of the Kenyan Government, global players and private investors. Their support allowed him to scale up his concept into a professional hydropower plant, which has since evolved into the Magiro Mini Hydro Power project.
Magiro Mini Hydro Power has become a beacon of progress, providing electricity to over 3000 households and several institutions in rural Kenya. This hydropower project meets the electricity demands of communities located near flowing water, offering sustainable, reliable, and affordable clean power.
Positive Impact of the Project:
Installation of Small Hydropower Plants:
Magiro Power currently operates three small hydropower installations in Muranga County, delivering affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity to 600 households and 3000 people impacted.
Lowering Greenhouse Gas Emissions:
With a current generation capacity of 60 kW, Magiro Power annually produces 290,000 kWh of green electricity, resulting in a significant reduction of 170 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.
Improving Livelihoods:
The cooling capabilities of Magiro Power plants play a vital role in reducing food waste, and supporting local industry and professional agriculture. Additionally, the project provides access to modern education and digital information, fostering overall community development.
John Magiro’s dedication and ingenuity have not only illuminated his village but have also set the stage for sustainable development, proving that grassroots initiatives can have a profound impact on the lives of many.
